Image Print Sizes from Dye Sublimation Printers
A guide to what printers can print, what size images and any hints or tips on printing various sizes.

Wide variety of high quality photographic sizes possible with no trimming required on some makes of photo printer Image Sizes
One of the first things to decide is what sizes of images you wish to print most often.

At first it may seem that the best route is to purchase the printer which prints the largest image; this is often not the most cost effective route or the easiest printer to use.

Many Photographers who wish to print a wide variety of sizes, purchase two printers to do the job; not only does this give you some redundancy and backup, should the worst happen, but it also gives complete flexibility.

Though at first this may seem expensive, and given the fact you need to print quite a few photos for this to be a required option, the profit made on each print would be considerable, and the payback time very quick indeed - sometimes even after your very first event.

Kodak 1400 Photo Printer
With the Kodak 1400 Digital Photo Printer, the price per print never changes regardless of image density or complexity. Print an 8x12, 8x10, or true A4, or print multiple images with 2-5x7, 2-6x8, or 4-4x6-inch photos per sheet. Choose from glossy or matte laminate.

Mitsubishi CP3020DE Photo Printer
Like the Kodak this Photo Printer from Mitsubishi will print 10"x8" (on A4 Paper), 12"x8" (on 8.5"x14" paper). It is also possible using software on your PC to print 2x 5"x7" or 2x 8"x6" or 4x 6"x4" with a 8.5"x14" media kit.

The cost per print on the Mitsubishi CP3020 is significantly cheaper than the Kodak although the original purchase price of the printer is higher.

Olympus P440 Photo Printer
The only 10"x8" printer that will print directly from a memory card. This printer is currently the most expensive per 10x8 print. It is also possible to print multiple images on an 10"x8" sheet. Paper and Ribbon are sold separately.

Note: Actual print size is very slightly smaller than 10"x8"

The cost per print is fixed with Dye Sublimation Printers and you have no hidden costs to worry about. However, printing just one 8"x6" on a 8.5"x14" sheet will cost you about £1.65 compared with about 70p on a HiTi 730 Series Printer. Even printing two 8"x6" prints is still more expensive and you still need to trim the print on Kodak or Mitsubishi Printers. The 730 series on the other hand can only print upto 8"x6" images, so if you print a lot of larger images an "A4" photo printer may also be a requirement.

Despite the initial reluctance, most photographers now print directly from the memory card without the need for a PC and Photoshop. Gone are the days when you need to spend lots of time "tweaking" colours etc.
