Kodak 1400 Maintenance Tips

The Kodak Professional 1400 Digital Photo Printer requires very little maintenance to keep producing high-quality prints. However, there are two items that do require some attention from time to time. They are: cleaning the printhead, and cleaning the pick rollers.

Cleaning the Printhead
Occasionally, debris will collect on the printhead. This can cause scratching of the print surface. To clean the printhead, you will need a soft, lint-free cloth and distilled water and / or isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. Dampen the cloth with distilled water and wipe the printhead Heater Line and Ribbon Guide Bar; always wiping in the same direction, to prevent smearing of the debris.

After wiping the Heater Line and Guide Bar several times (using a different portion of the cloth every time). If debris is still visible, use your fingernail to “scrape” off the debris. Do not bring any metal object in contact with the printhead, as it will likely damage it. Wipe the printhead after scraping off any debris. Please note that the cloth should be damp and not dripping.

If you have isopropyl alcohol available, lightly dampen a cloth with alcohol and wipe the
printhead using the same technique described above. This will remove any excess water from
the printhead. If you don’t have alcohol, wipe the head several times with a dry cloth to remove any remaining moisture.

You can purchase a combination alcohol/water pad (70% alcohol, 30% water) directly from
Kodak Parts Services. The part numbers are shown below:

Cleaning the Pick Rollers
The pick rollers are the rubber rollers that eject the paper from the paper tray. Over time, they
get dirty and begin to slip on the paper when attempting to eject it. This can result in the paper entering the printer skewed and can also leave black marks on the paper where the rollers were spinning on the paper.

To clean the pick rollers, remove the paper try from the printer. Using a soft, lint-free cloth,
dampen the cloth with isopropyl alcohol and wipe the outer circumference of the pick rollers.
The rollers turn freely in one direction, but not in the other, making it easy to rotate the roller,
wipe, rotate, wipe, etc.
